artwork

To me, the process of hunting and gathering the experiences and stories that inspire the artwork is as important as the painting itself.

I'm currently represented by two galleries where you can find my original work:

• Fallen Leaf Gallery in Canmore, AB. https://www.fallenleafgallery.com

• Black Spruce Gallery in Waskesiu, Sask. https://blacksprucegallery.ca

Beach Ball - 36" x 36"

Beach Ball - 36" x 36"

This big o'black bear has been frequenting the shores gorging himself on fish getting ready for winter's hibernation. Naming this piece 'Beach Ball' just seemed appropriate.

Fem Fatale - 48" x 48"

Fem Fatale - 48" x 48"

I've seen it many times. A female griz sitting passively and looking totally unthreatening. But get between her and her cubs and watch out. I purposely used soft pink pastel background colors and a passive pose to contrast the potential danger of her claws that have yet to be unleashed.

Silent Running - 40" x 30" SOLD

Silent Running - 40" x 30" SOLD

It's always amazed me how such a large animal can be so quiet when bolting through the woods. I've been busted by them many times while hunting and all I ever hear is an initial "crack",... and then silence. I love the visual of a moose in motion... they are all antlers, gangly legs and hooves.

Totally Buff - 24" x 30" SOLD

Totally Buff - 24" x 30" SOLD

My father used to own a buffalo ranch. I inherited an amazing skull from one of the big bulls that died in a fight with another bull. This is my latest painting titled 'Totally Buff'. It's what I imagined the winning bull looked like staring down his opponent before the altercation.

Toonie - 24" x 24" SOLD

Toonie - 24" x 24" SOLD

A mother loon and her chick. The sound of a loon is quintessentially Canadian to me. I just love hearing them whenever I visit my lake cabin in southern British Columbia. Their haunting call fills my soul.

Yellow Eyes - 36" x 36" SOLD

Yellow Eyes - 36" x 36" SOLD

I was reading an interview with hunter and adventure seeker Donnie Vincent on Huckberry's website. When asked about any experiences that stood out for him among the rest, he answered..."While in Alaska, a jet-black wolf walked into camp on a snowy afternoon. I’ll never forget his golden-yellow eyes; we stood politely close and stared at each other for quite some time. He was beautiful." This painting captures that moment as I imagined it.

The Mighty Wapiti - 24" x 24 SOLD"

The Mighty Wapiti - 24" x 24 SOLD"

This painting entitled 'The Mighty Wapiti' was the the Shawnee word for elk which literally means ‘white rump.’ I grew up near the Wapiti River in northern Alberta. Sightings of elk are common along the banks whenever you travel up and down that river.

Grumpy - 20" x 20" SOLD

Grumpy - 20" x 20" SOLD

I love painting Black Bears because as an artist I find they can have a full range of facial expressions to portray. This painting practically named itself.

Blue Moose - 24' x 24" SOLD

Blue Moose - 24' x 24" SOLD

The moose is one of God's creatures that looks like it was made from spare parts. But to me as an artist, the moose is one of the moose interesting and graphically appealing animals to paint.

Papa Bear - 60" x 60" SOLD

Papa Bear - 60" x 60" SOLD

Many years ago while moose hunting in northern Alberta during the rutting season, I had stopped to make a cow call. I had an eerie sense that something was watching me. Sure enough I looked over my shoulder and there was this big black bear just sitting there on it's butt staring curiously at me. He must have decided I wasn't a much of a threat and it just got up and walked slowly away. That's when I finally lowered my weapon and stopped shaking.

Busted - 36" x 36" SOLD

Busted - 36" x 36" SOLD

Trying to stalk a giant mule deer buck bedded down in the short grass is always a huge challenge. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've been busted. This proper snorter has just gotten up and is getting ready to bolt.

Waving Goodbye - 36" x 36"

Waving Goodbye - 36" x 36"

The whitetail deer lifts and waves it's white furry tail as it runs away to avoid perceived danger. It's what generally happens to me once I get busted for getting a bit too close. Their sense of hearing, smell and sight never cease to amaze me.

Wabbit Season - 24" x 24" SOLD

Wabbit Season - 24" x 24" SOLD

I love fall. That time of year when the rabbits are turning from brown to white. These little critters are everywhere in my Calgary, Alberta neighbourhood. They are either sitting motionless or sprinting like this one. Even though I used warm colours to keep this painting fairly mono-chromatic, this rabbit represents a sure sign that a white winter is coming.

Irving the Great - 60" x 48" SOLD

Irving the Great - 60" x 48" SOLD

For several years at my Father's moose hunting camp we had sightings of this giant moose. His antlers spanned the cutline and were definitely the largest we had ever seen in the region. We nick-named him 'Irving the Great' after my Dad's old hunting buddy Irv Hubbic. Every year it was a challenge to see who would get Irving but nobody ever did. He became a legend to us and we spoke of him often around the campfire over the years.

Foxy Lady - 48" x 24" SOLD

Foxy Lady - 48" x 24" SOLD

I did this painting for a friend and colleague who wanted to give it to his wife. Apparently she is totally into foxes and he is totally into her, so it hangs in their bedroom above the bed... Hope it inspires them. ; )

Plan B - 60" x 48" SOLD

Plan B - 60" x 48" SOLD

I'll bet you are wondering why this paintings called Plan B? It started off as a moose in the middle of a meadow, but it just wasn't working for me. Sometimes when things just don't work out the way we intend them to, we have to come up with a Plan B. I salvaged this painting by working into a pure landscape. The owner of this painting loves the fact that somewhere under this paint is the ghost of a moose. I like it too,... because after all, I am a wildlife artist at heart.

Seven 48" x 36" SOLD

Seven 48" x 36" SOLD

I don't typically do commissions but I made an except for a good friend. This is a painting of a Malemute named Seven. He's an award winning world class dog.
